Four Search Predictions for 2010 – Search Engine Watch (SEW)

I ended last year by swiftly showing 2009 the door. Regardless of client or industry, no one seemed sad to see 2009 retire into the sunset.

So here we are in 2010, and I get to make a bunch of predictions that I won’t be held accountable for, which is the beauty of writing a column or predicting the weather.

Overall, I’m optimistic for what 2010 has to offer. If you believe in numbers, then the recent J.P. Morgan report that global search will grow roughly 17.8 percent and display advertising nearly 11 percent is encouraging. So with that… on with the predictions!

The Google Search Screw: Google Knows Best

Imagine you have been in business, operating on the web for years now. Your name is unique and it ranks number one in the Google results, since it is unique. But then imagine a new site pops up that is similar to your name. Then soon after, Google decided that your name is really not what people want, instead, they want the other name.

In other words, they type in your business name and Google say – no no, you spelled it wrong, you want a competitor or another web site. Google then hides your web site and shows the competitor. How would you feel?

That is the story of a Google Webmaster Help thread. The owner of BrandFreek no longer comes up for a search on [brandfreek], instead, Google shows a result for BrandFreak and shows BrandFreak.com in the first spot. Here is a picture:

Google AdWords Display URLs for Hosted Domains Must Include Sub Domains

A new, and logical, Google AdWords display URL policy was announced this week. In summary, if you are on a public, hosted domain, you must show the subdomain that you are using in your display URL. For example:

Incorrect:

Destination URL: http://adwords.blogspot.com

Display URL: blogspot.com

Correct:

Destination URL: http://adwords.blogspot.com

Display URL: adwords.blogspot.com

Incorrect:

Destination URL: http://subdomain.wordpress.com

Display URL: wordpress.com

State urged to join junk mail ‘do not mail’ registry

SEATTLE – The Seattle City Council is considering urging the state legislature to establish a “do not mail” registry for junk mail, similar to the national “do not call” registry.”I feel like I have a right not to have garbage delivered to my door. It’s like trespassing,” said registry supporter Ellie Rose of Zero Waste Seattle. The Direct Marketing Association already has an opt-out option. You can log onto DMA Choice to register and limit the amount of junk mail you get. The association says a law to stop junk mail would cost thousands of direct mail jobs. Each year, 105 billion pieces of unsolicited direct mail goes out. The City Council says that’s the equivalent of 100 million trees. The proposed “do-not-mail” registry would be voluntary. If it passes, Washington would join 16 other states in calling for a “do not mail” registry
