Can You Make Money With AdSense?
In many ways, to see good results with Google AdSense requires a journey into the psychology of people. Where people click, why they click, what makes them click, are all things you have to investigate in order to make money with Google AdSense.
It took me several years to actually make money with AdSense. I had ads on my sites for long periods of time, with no clicks. My first year of using Google AdSense produced a whopping $20.00! I had just about given up on AdSense until I found Joel Comm. After employing the things that I learned for Joel, what was $20.00 per year slowly turned into $100.00 per month on average. What made the difference?
What Worked For Me
The following changes made a dramatic difference regardless of the blog I was working on. Whether on my political blogs, or any of my micro blogs, these changes made a huge difference regardless of the topic of the blog.
- Forget about ads in sidebars. This is the worst place to put Google ads. They will sit there for years, looking all pretty, but with few if any clicks.
- Text ads win over image ads. From my research, I see a two to one ratio between image and text ads. Twice as many people click text ads than image ads.
- Less is more. When you place ads in a more “scientific” manner, then there is no need to plaster ads all over the place. I get more clicks by using fewer, strategically placed ads.
- The number one producing ad is… and not just for me but overall for everyone… 300 x 250 box ad.
- The number two best producing ad over all is… the leaderboard.
- The number three best producing ad is… the vertical half banner.
The Best Places to Put the Ads
- The box ad, with NO border, medium text with BLUE links placed in the text of the article – on the LEFT hand side. You will get far fewer clicks with the ad on the right. The second best place for the box ad is in the bottom center of the post.
- Full banner ads work best in the top center of the post or page.
- Leaderboards surprisingly work best at the bottom of the website. Leaderboard Ads at the top do not produce.
Diversified Income Streams
For me diversifying my income streams is a must. My primary income is through serving as webmaster and building websites for businesses. Google has a LONG way to go to come close to this income. My second money making stream comes through my affiliate micro sites. Google comes in at a distant third place compared to these other income streams, but I’ll take all I can get.
My goal for 2010 is to double my monthly income from adsense. I have also just started to use Chitika ads as well.
One Cool Ad Management Plugin
One plugin I highly recommend is WhyDoWorkAdSense. It allows you to manage all of your advertisements from your WordPress dashboard.
You can also exclude individual pages from having AdSense show up. I use this feature on my political blogs, leaving ads off highly controversial social issues.
What Does The Ad Pay?
I have found that the most important thing about Google ads, is where you place them. This is even more important than traffic. You can have tons of traffic and still make very little with Google ads.
The other point is what the ads pay. Some keyword clicks bring in only 5, 10, or 25 cents. Other clicks can bring in 5 or 6 dollars just with one click!
Let me know what your experience is with ad placement, and if you make any of the suggested changes in this post, please let me know if you see the same results as I have. Happy blogging!

Thanks for the write up (found this on Blog Engage) This is my first site I am trying to monetize (other sites were products based so ads were not important) so I am learning as I go. Downloading the WP plugin now.

Hi CyberSmart

Although i have recently changed my plugin as it was making my posting style little bit ugly
Now i am using Easy Adsense which i also quite good and when it comes to AD placement i have placed
"300×250 Text ad at the top of the post
Half Horizontal Image ad at the mid position of the post
At last 300×250 Image ad at the end of the post "
I think i need to start shifting the ad placement everyday for the best position
How come you post is having only 2 ads what about the 3rd one ???
My recent post Suggest Topic and Win 1 year WpWebHost Hosting Account via WebDesignFan
There are three: The box ad, the full banner, and the leaderboard. I only run these three because they are the best. I leave room for my affiliate links. After 4 days the ads change from Google to the higher paying web hosting ads. Easy Adsense is also a fine setup. Thanks for the input, and come again!
Hey Chuck, this is really timely. I have a blogger blog and I'm using Adsense on it and I just began with Amazon. I wasn't looking for much from either of them, I just wanted to try them out. But now that I have these tips under my belt, along with the SEO strategies your blog has taught me – I'm beginning to change outlook. I'd like to hear more about affiliate sites too. Do you have an article I can read to get started?
Thanks for the valuable info.

A few things to be aware of: Affiliate links can be a problem… this is where "link cloaking" comes in. If you use the java rather than the HTML, Google has a harder time seeing them. That's a big topic that I will post on in the future.
Basically there are two ways to get affiliates. First, you can going over to Commission Junction and sign up with them. They are a portal, and have MANY companies to choose from. Click Bank is another option, but I don't do well with them.
The other way is to go to a product site that you like. Usually if you scroll down to the bottom of the page you will find the "affiliates" link. My BlueHost is direct with them, rather than through a third party. Just to give you an idea, BlueHost pays $65.00 per sale.(I sold two this month) It takes MANY Google clicks to get that kind of cash.
Same with Amazon, you start out at 4%, and can move up to 15%- This is not big bucks, but, it all adds up.
Hey, I'll tell you what. You don't have to, but I would like to offer you space with my hosting co. for free, for 2009. You don't have to, but I see that you love to blog and I'd love to see you get free of .org. Hit me in my contact and we can talk. "-)

Hye, MrCyberSmart.
I totally agree with you. Text ads is better than image ads.
Locating ads between or in the middle of the post is also works best.

Chuck,
I tried to update my Adsense settings and I’m totally lost. There are so many tabs, I’m not sure if I’m doing it correctly. I’m confused about channels too…
When I go into setup I don’t see all of my channels listed under units. So it’s like I’m going in circles. Help!
Any video tutorials (from you) around?

Are you up? Give me a call. I'm up.
I also think that the ad on the sidebar has no any value. I tested by putting ad on the sidebar but do not get any clicks.
I also noticed that as you mentioned here that text ads work better than image ads.
Hey thanks for the input. Yes, people do not even see the image ads any more. They look right past them.
Hey Chuck!
Just checking out your site for the 1st time. I love it and will be a frequent visitor and commentor in the New Year. I'll sign up for your Email updates so I don't miss a thing!
And a thought…
I'd love to create a video for your sidebar – If you don't mind me putting in a link – here is a VIDEO Guest post I did for Ben-Lang.com – How to Tell What Theme Your Favorite Blog is Using. I think something along those lines would be a good fit for your video sidebar – what do you think?
Cheers and thanks!
(By the way, I'm @donpower on Twitter – you and I were discussing the whole www vs http naming convention in WordPress!).
Cheers Chuck – very glad to have found you!
